While software is being developed, defects are inevitably injected. In fact defects can be injected at any stage of the development lifecycle, not just coding. The basic goal of any development project remains to develop software that either has no defects or has as few defects as possible. Upstream inspections can eliminate up to 90 percent of a software project's defects while simultaneously producing net cost and schedule savings of 10 to 30 percent. That is why Peer Reviews are a critical component of any effort to reduce software defects or project costs and achieve the shortest possible schedule. Mindscape 's software engineering process incorporates both Reviews and Structured Walkthroughs. The process of conducting Reviews and structured walkthroughs are documented and followed to ensure that the whole exercise is productive.
